Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

What is Coaching?

Coaching is a conversation like no other.

Life coaching is a relationship the client has with the coach that is designed to facilitate the creation/development of personal, professional or business goals and to develop and carry out the strategy/plan for achieving those goals. Life coaching is about the coach facilitating the client’s journey, keeping the client accountable to the agreed goals and generally keeping the client on track. Think of life coaching like a hike up the mountain – the coach (like the walking guide) will show the way and it is up to the client to do the walking.

Life coaching does not treat mental disorders and is not a substitute for counselling, psychotherapy, psychoanalysis, mental health care or substance abuse treatment.

How does it Work?

For Life Coaching the client is invited to participate in a free session to see if life coaching is what the client is looking for to address their issues. This free coaching session gives the prospective client the opportunity to evaluate the coach and to satisfy themselves that this is what they are looking for. It also gives the coach the opportunity to assess the client for suitability which means the coach has the opportunity to satisfy herself that the prospective client is ready to commit to the process and has a genuine desire to achieve their goals.

During the free session, should the prospective client elect to commit to the coaching, the coaching agreement is established which includes frequency of sessions and the cost. It is also during this time that the method of payment will be addressed.

How Much Does it Cost?

The cost will depend on what the client wants. Obviously the coach cannot give the prospective client a quote for services without both parties understanding the process and what the client’s needs are. Think about going to the supermarket and asking the attendant for the price of cheese. What sort of cheese, how big is the amount required – there are a host of questions.

Does the Coach Give Guarantees?

Yes and No is the short answer.

Yes, the coach guarantees that at the end of the client’s time with the coach the client will have experienced a difference however the degree of that difference will depend on the commitment of the client to achieve the goals that were agreed upon.

No, the coach does not give guarantees around the client’s commitment to the client’s achieving the outcome set. How can one person give a guarantee based on another person’s personal performance and commitment?

Confidentiality – Will My Secrets Stay Secret?

It is paramount that the coach maintains total confidentiality and whatever is discussed within the session stays in the session. However, it is equally important for the client to understand that should the coach understand the client is likely to harm either himself/herself and/or others, then the coach has an obligation to report this to the appropriate authorities.

How Long Will It Take?

Each session is generally a 50 minute hour. This means the session will finish when the client’s goals for that session have been achieved and it may be 45 minutes or it may be a little over the hour. The coach will not leave the client suspended “mid-goal” just because the time is up. Some sessions take a little longer than others. This is all about you the client.

Any Other Rules?

Yes – all mobile phones are to be turned off during the session. In the event the client is distracted by the mobile phone either ringing or receiving messages, the client is doing themselves a dis-service and the session will be terminated, the session will be treated as completed and the client will still have to pay for that time. This is a matter of priorities and for the time the client has elected to spend with the coach, the client is expected to honour him/herself and be totally present in the moment.
